People want to protect themselves and their environment.Starting from this observation, REACH is yet another legislative step in attaining that goal.
Since a lot of the currently existing regulations will be replaced, REACH will have a significant impact on the way we handle chemicals.
What exactly is REACH ?
REACH stands for Registration, Evaluation and Authorization of Chemicals.
Registration is required for all substances produced or imported in volumes > 1Ton. The registration will be handled through a phased system. The production and the following use of large volumes of chemicals can lead to a higher risk for exposure, so these chemicals will come first:
All chemicals produced in the EU require registration, but also all the chemicals imported in the EU, even if these chemicals are only imported for example in preparations.
Since REACH implies extra costs on the chemicals, chances are that some chemicals or specific uses (registration is per use) will disappear.
When you read this, you see that not only the chemical manufacturers will be affected by REACH, but also everybody who uses chemicals. All parts of the supply chain will have to work together to make REACH work and insure the continued registered use of chemical products in all the different applications in the market.
REACH will demand a lot of work, in only a limited timeframe. For that reason, Taminco believes that preparation is a very important part of compliance to REACH.
