Banguard, the avant garde protectant for Sigatoka

banguard 42sc.jpg

Characteristics of Banguard

Taminco successfully developed Banguard® for the management of the most devastating disease affecting the banana industry i.e. Black Sigatoka. Banguard® is a protective and non systemic fungicide, which contains the active ingredient of Thiram (420 g of thiram/liter). This is a dimethyl-bis-dithiocarbamate and differs from EBDC's (ethylene-bis-dithiocarbamates). This explains why Banguard® will not break down to ETU (ethylenethiourea), a dangerous compound which is of high concern.

Banguard® possesses an excellent preventive activity with broad spectrum of disease control. It inhibits spore germination and growth of the mycelium by interfering with various enzymes involved in the respiration process. This property of acting on many sites of the biochemical process ensures that Banguard® is free from resistance problems and effective against many fungi. Banguard® is the alternative fungicide in Sigatoka sustained management.

Use recommendations

Banguard® is available in a liquid formulation, Banguard® 42 SC. This high quality formulation was especially developed for aerial spray. It is easy to handle and has good compatibility with other plant protection products.
The recommended application rate of Banguard® is 2-3 liters per hectare, depending on the disease pressure and the mix with other fungicides. It can be mixed with mineral or vegetal crop oil at a rate of 7 liters/ha, in a spray volume of 23 liters/ha.

Available packaging size

  • 50 liters drum
  • 200 liters drum
  • 20,000 liters isotank

Compatibility

Banguard® should only be used in applications for the control of Sigatoka disease in banana. For cocktail mixing with other fungicides and liquid fertilizers, a compatibility and phytotoxicity test are strongly recommended prior to mixing.

Worldwide toxicological support

Convinced of the agronomic importance of Banguard®, Taminco developed a new data package on the toxicoloqy, ecotoxicology, environmental fate and residues of thiram in fruit and vegetables. Furthermore, efficacy trials for the management of Mycosphaerella fijiensis on bananas have been executed with the formulation Banguard® 42 SC in Colombia, México, Costa Rica, Ecuador and the Philippines. All this studies have been performed according to EPA, OECD and specific European guidelines to support the product worldwide.
Thiram of Taminco is registered in the list of accredited active ingredients at EU level (Annex I of directive 91/414/EC).

The Unique Profile of Banguard®
